Access keys

When you are using LegalCitation to cite sources, there 2 different ways of placing citations formatted by the program into your document.

  • Copying the citation from the Preview box and pasting it into your document.

  • Using the Access phrase in your record as an Access key in your document to create a "link" to the record for the authority cited.

    Using the Access key method, you can include pinpoint cites in your document, thus allowing you to enter only record for any given source work. Also, using the Access key method, you can reformat your citations in a different citation style.

    For example:
    To cite page 920 in the article by Patterson, entered here as a LegalCitation record:

    We would enter the following Access key in our document:
    {Patterson 1990: 920}
    When we run the Generate Citations feature in LegalCitation, this Access key will be replaced by the following footnote:
    L. Ray Patterson, Legal Ethics and the Lawyer's Duty of Loyalty, 29 Emory L.J. 909, 920 (1980).
    Example of a document with Access keys citing authorities:

    Note that Access keys can be entered directly into footnotes with signals and other explanatory text.
